Personality & Traits

General Overview Xerin is methodical and precise but capable of great leaps of logic in emergency situations. He has an excellent grasp of the ‘big picture’, however he admits to being less than an expert in the area of diplomacy. He has an intuitive sense that tells him when to back off and let people do their jobs, however, when he gives an order to his team, it is expected to be followed. The young man carries an air of authority about him.

Occasionally, Xerin shows a streak of brazenness in his actions owing to his young age. He is generally calm and casual, and often quips with the crew. Xerin always expects the best from his team, and he gives them his best at all times. He will challenge his people if he feels they can do better, though he may sometimes seemingly expect the impossible. Fiercely loyal to his crew, Li will risk much for them in life-threatening situations.

Personal History Xerin was born in 2357 to Allyson and Kuan Li in the city of Marrakesh on Earth. Xerin was a bright and imaginative child, generally preferring his own company to the company of other children. Like his older sister, Xerin was stubborn and independent. He and his sister however became quite close. The exception to this was his relationship with Kuan. Due to his father’s somewhat aloof nature, Xerin and Kuan never were as close as he and his sister. While not estranged, the relationship of Xerin and his father was loving but somewhat distant. Kuan tended to be ‘protective’ of his children, something that did not sit well with their independent spirits. One thing they did agree on was Starfleet. At age 17, the young man entered Starfleet Academy and started on a double major in Operations and Sciences, believing that this would lead to that which he loved most -- adventure.

As he progressed through the Academy, Xerin became something of a workaholic, pushing himself harder and harder, adding Engineering and Security courses to his workload, all in an effort to show that he could succeed on his own and fight out from under his father’s shadow. So heavy was his workload that Xerin had next to no friends for the first two years. At this time, suffering from exhaustion, depression, and burn-out, the young man was forced to take a break form the Academy for nearly 8 months. Xerin returned home during this time, and he battled with feelings of failure for the first few weeks. It wasn’t until his beloved sister Echo returned home for two weeks that he truly began to heal. She helped Xerin understand that the only person he had to prove himself to was… himself. His relationship with his father also changed dramatically, and they became much closer. Eventually Xerin returned to the Academy a much more balanced man, and as a result, he was able to keep his grades high while still having time to socialize and have friends. The one area of the Academy that seemed to cause the young man the most difficulty was his courses on diplomacy. In his heart, he was a scientist, not a politician.

Upon graduation from the Academy, Xerin was stationed aboard the USS Valor as an Operations Officer. While he excelled at his work, the sheer number of staff and the drudgery of the work made standing out difficult at best. Therefore it was quite a surprise when his superior officer called him in to say he had recommended the young man for a one year posting as a Starfleet Scientific Liaison to a Federation research think tank. Xerin was stunned by the opportunity, and happily agreed.

During his year on Earth, Xerin met a Vulcan Starfleet Captain by the name of Starnn. He had come to recruit a new Assistant Chief of Operations for his ship, the USS Heisenberg. At the recommendation of his superior officer, Xerin was handed the assignment. Serving aboard the Nova class Heisenberg, he investigated the formation of a new type of singularity, participated in First Contact with the J’rall of Pollax II, and was able to publish several papers on quantum filament formation within a subspace medium, for which he was nominated for a Daystrom Institute research award. It was a choice assignment, and though he did not realize it at the time, it would open up new opportunities for the young man.

It wasn’t long before the young man was promoted and assigned to the USS Arisa as Assistant Chief of Operations. He often had the opportunity to ‘fill-in’ in the Science department as needed. Xerin felt as if he had won the lottery. The ship was new and embarking on some exciting new missions, and his team was competent and pleasant to work with. He had made many friends aboard the Heisenberg, and the social skills he gained there held him in good stead aboard the Arisa. The only dark spot to this seemingly ideal posting was the Executive Officer. Lieutenant Commander Michael Jarvis was a handsome man and a brilliant Exec. Unfortunately, he knew it. Arrogant and rude, Jarvis had a brusque manner at the best of times, and he seemed to hold an almost patronizing attitude toward the junior members of the crew, something Xerin found both shocking and aggravating. Thanks to his father, the young man was quite capable of taking care of himself both physically and intellectually. If the man had simply been a Department Head it would have been much easier, but Jarvis was the Executive Officer and that made things uncomfortable at best. About six months into his assignment, word came down that Jarvis was being reassigned to another ship, much to the private joy of the crew.
