Physical Description Jay is a somewhat short, slight man, but that does not mean that he doesn't have a presence - he can be a little intense. He has wiry muscles but not much bulk. His body is lightly toned from his love of running. His hair colour has been described differently by the people in his life. To some, it is brown, to some, it is red (especially in sunlight), but Jay himself considers it auburn, some shade between brown and red. His eyes are the colour of milk chocolate, mixed from his mother's Betazoid influence, but within them are little specks of green, a nod to his father's Irish heritage.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Jay appears at first a short, slight man, but once that first impression is over you find a very enthusiastic, energetic man. Friends have said that he has quite the mood swings, and occasionally displays a fighting Irish temper, but these tend to play off of his half-Betazoid empath abilities as well - If someone around him is feeling strongly, it can sometimes destabilize his own mood. He is working on cognitive therapy to balance both sides of himself and to develop the ability to calm himself more rapidly.

Jay is an avid runner, and frequently loads trails of the Irish countryside into the holodeck. He runs 10k at a time, a few times a week. Occasionally he will load a race program so he can see if he still measures up - not to any of the greats, just the Chicago Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, qualifiers for the Worlds, but he's never won or had a time that qualified for the Worlds. Just average, which is a neverending struggle for him.

Jay is quite ambitious. He always sets his sights on the top, and his sheer tenacity means he usually gets there eventually.

Being half Betazoid, Jay has some empathic ability as well as telepathic ability, but his telepathic abilities only work with other telepaths. Being able to feel others' emotions is hard for Jay, his human side also has the tendency to be influenced by the moods of his friends, so he can go through a wide range of emotions in a shorter time than most people.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: tenacity, ambition, quick reflexes
Weaknesses: emotional, perfectionistic to a fault
Ambitions Jay is a very ambitious person, and wants to reach the top of whatever he's doing. His immediate ambition, of course, is to be promoted to Chief Flight Control Officer. He wants long term to go as high in Starfleet as he can, maybe even Admiral of his own ship. He also wants to master his empath/telepath abilities and become a fast enough runner that he qualifies for the Worlds in his old Earth program.
Hobbies & Interests Running - both solo and competitively, Traditional Irish Bataireacht (stick fighting), attempting to create new running trails for the holodeck, poker

Personal History Jay's mother Yaxara was a Betazoid woman who came to Earth to study psychology at one of it's most prominent Irish Universities. Her family was very traditional and did not approve of her leaving Betazed and pursuing human achievements and cut contact with her. She met Ian in her second year, and they were immediately inseperable. Friends said their relationship was fated, they were meant to be.

When Yaxara was in her final year of school, and Ian had graduated with a History degree, Yaxara became pregnant. The baby was Ian's, and he married her. Ian got a job teaching History at a high school, they moved to the city, and Yaxara had baby Jay and settled into the domestic life with some complaint, as she had seen herself achieving "more".

Jay's first 5 years were spent mostly with his mother. She increasingly resented being a housebound mother, and Jay was able to sense this, even though his empathic abilities hadn't developed yet. It was a cold, unhappy home until Ian returned late in the evenings, and he filled the house with laughter and song. This constant swinging from cold resentment to happy singing during his formative years probably shaped his perfectionism and need for control, as well as his less than average grasp on his own emotional side.

When Jay was 5, his mother could take it no longer and informed Ian she was leaving him and their son. Yaxara did as her family did to her, and disappeared, never bothering to contact Ian or Jay again. To this day, Jay has no idea where she is.

Ian quit his high school job and became a holoprojection teacher - he recorded his lectures holographically, and they were projected to students who decided to take courses holographically instead of attending school. Since this required him to be away from home much less, he became sole caregiver to Jay. Life was much more stable for Jay at this point, but his weak grasp on emotions led to many tantrums. Around this time, his father's sister and her husband stepped in to help Ian out.

When Jay was 12, his empathic powers started developing. With no Betazoid influence in his life to guide him, he tried to understand what was happening to him by reading about it in the databanks, but it was harder to put it into practice.

Jay is definitely able to feel others' emotions, maybe a little too much, and with telepathic beings he is able to sometimes share thoughts. His abilities developed in spite of not having any guidance. His uncle tried really hard to help him, and Jay has the rudiments of the ability to completely control his abilities, and is actively working on increasing his competence.

Jay always had the nagging wish to get away, which led him to Starfleet. The chain of command and opportunities for advancement appealed to his ambitious side, and he entered the Academy. There, his quick reflexes proved him to be a more than competent pilot, and he decided that's what he would do.

Jay still feels a strong bond with his father and his uncle and attempts to stay in contact with them whenever possible.
